Bert is thrilled by recognition from a yacht design company following the LSU iniative

Children from the Learning Support Unit have been encouraged to find inspiration to succeed from the text book – “Creative Successful Dyslexic” by Margaret Rooke.  

It makes fascinating reading and contains the personal experiences of well-known people with dyslexia.  They describe the difficulties they faced in childhood and the strength they required to overcome them.  They reveal how dyslexia enabled them to see things differently and to use their unique creativity in exceptional ways.  It has accounts from Eddie Izzard, Sir Richard Branson, Chris Robshaw, Richard Rogers and many more. A percentage of this book’s sales go to the Dyslexia Action charity which supports this publication. 

Bert H read about Kelly Hoppen(MBE)’s perseverance and determination.  The renowned interior designer hated school and struggles with reading, spelling and maths.  She left school at 16 and began her own business.  She uses her natural ability to design homes, super-yachts and hotels.  “My mum and dad didn’t put pressure on me. They saw I loved designing and backed me.  So I grew up with self-belief, and if you believe in yourself then others will too.”

After reading this Bert decided to practice his drawing which he loved doing.  He got a drawing board for his birthday and brought into school lots of great designs for luxury super yachts.

During his LSU lesson he composed a letter to Sunseeker Yachts in Poole asking them if they would look at his designs and if he could be shown around their business. 

Many weeks later Bert was asked to collect a large parcel from the office and picked it up on his way home.  With all his family around him Bert opened the package to find a fully illustrate book of boat designs from Sunseeker and a very warm congratulatory letter inviting him to see them and to keep up his fantastic designing.

Bert is over the moon with this recognition from a prestigious boat building company.  His self-esteem has been hugely boosted and it will make the enormous efforts he makes to learn seem worthwhile.
