On Thursday, a group of Year 5 children travelled over to Sherborne Girls to start their exciting day trying to “Crack the Code”. We were greeted by delicious ‘chemical element’ biscuits and were split into teams from different schools.

The next few hours were spent completing tasks from both Mathematics and Humanities; using different styles of code-breaking. Travelling around the world, answering quiz questions all to gain points and eventually unlock the large star to claim victory. We all felt a little like we were on a scaled-down version of ‘I’m A Celebrity’ from ITV, but without the bugs

We were then treated to a lovely roast lunch at Sherborne Boys and continued our investigations in the Science and Languages department. The children performed a practical experiment to extract DNA from a strawberry and created a strand of DNA using origami; a code-breaking task in itself!

They also learnt a brand-new language in just 10 minutes using the patterns they could see within the translated numbers. After four activities we certainly felt like we were Alan Turing! We would like to pass on our thanks to the Sherborne Schools for hosting such a fabulous, fun-filled and educational event.
