Prep Academic

8S have been studying a range of environmental matters this term.

It has been good to look at farming in recent weeks, and the need to be profitable and promote food security, whilst also prioritising environmental imperatives.  Our visit to Higher Clapton Farm has helped us understand what synthetic inputs (fertilisers / fungicides / pesticides) are and how it is possible to minimise their use.  We looked at crop rotation and minimum disturbance cultivation techniques, in combination with cover crops, to maintain green cover on fields for as long as possible (10-11 months of the year).  It was great to understand the science of this, particularly what promotes healthy, nutrient rich soil.  It was a very informative visit, helping link some of the themes we have covered as part of Eco Fest with day-to-day decisions being made by farmers.  We are really grateful for such a thorough and informative learning opportunity.
