Year 5 WW1 afternoon

Year 5 had an interesting afternoon themed around their current WW1 studies. Mr Warren visited them in full WW1 uniform and told them all about the enlistment process. Mr Warren was impressed with how much the children knew about the First World War, which Mr Barnes was very pleased about.

The children were given an Attestation Form (pictured below) which they filled out before swearing the oath to King George.

Short Service attestation form

Once they were sworn in the children received the King’s Shilling and a WW1 helmet. They then took up their rifle (which was really a hockey stick) and went outside to have parade and drill. Major Barrow and Drill Sergeant Charlton from King’s Bruton Cadet Force came over specially. They soon had the children standing up nice and straight, handling their rifles correctly and marching properly. Spirits were high and everyone thoroughly enjoyed doing drill. Mrs Fawbert very kindly arranged for some of the Year 5 boys to use the marching drums and a steady marching rhythm was beaten out and marched well to. After drill the children went back inside and wrote a letter home to their families letting them know they had enlisted and would soon be off to The Front.

It was a great and enjoyable afternoon. Many thanks to Mr Warren, Major Barrow and Drill Sergeant Charlton for their time, energy and good humour.
