Year 5 Art Day at Kings School
On 19 June, all of Year 5 travelled over to King’s Bruton for an afternoon of inspiring creative art activities. Led by King’s Head of Art, Seamus Harkness, and his Art Department team, all pupils participated in a carousel of three skill‑building workshops.
The children learned some silversmithing techniques, using a rounded hammer to dimple a strip of metal and create an eye‑catching textured appearance. They used letter punches to embed their name or chosen words into the reverse, and then carefully bent the metal to form their very own bracelet.
Pupils were excited to learn that the second activity involved clay. The children were encouraged to think of a visual reference that represented them — a favourite hobby, sport, or something similar. They then set about carefully working and crafting the soft clay to create a small relief sculpture to be attached to a large terracotta vase, resulting in a bold group piece.
The third activity was based on imagery from around King’s Bruton and the wider Bruton area. Signs, viewpoints, and architectural features were used as a basis for pupils to contribute to a group painting, making reference to the style and palette of the visionary British painter David Hockney.
Our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a wonderfully creative and engaging afternoon at King’s Bruton, and we are extremely grateful to Seamus and the team for organising and hosting such a fantastic event.
