Pre-School Explore Capacity with Flowers
It has been another busy and exciting week of learning in Pre-School!
The children have continued exploring our Slow Down book and have been discovering the fascinating life cycle of a ladybird. They each painted their own ladybird and enjoyed sequencing the stages of the life cycle into the correct order. Along the way, the children learned how a ladybird’s shell protects its wings and how its bright red colour helps to warn off predators. We also compared the ladybird’s life cycle to that of a caterpillar, noticing similarities and differences between the two.
In numeracy, the classroom has been filled with the most beautiful blooms, carefully arranged by the children themselves. Through this lovely activity, they have been developing their mathematical language and understanding by exploring capacity, pouring just the right amount of water into their jars, identifying shapes, measuring stems to ensure the flowers fit, and counting both flowers and colours. It has also been a wonderfully calming, mindful, and creative experience for the children to enjoy together.
In literacy, we have been reading Alfie and the Big Boys by Shirley Hughes. Inspired by the story, the children created their own individual masks, just like the children in the book. We also compared Alfie’s classroom experiences with our own, noticing many similarities between Alfie’s day and life in our Pre-School. It has quickly become a much-loved story among the children.
Our Friday swimmers are also doing incredibly well and are well on their way to earning their swim bags! Each week they continue to practise a variety of swimming skills while building confidence in the pool and, most importantly, having lots of fun.
