Year 5 Adaptation of The Tempest

Year 5’s Platform event of 'The Tempest' was an outstanding triumph; intelligent, imaginative, and richly entertaining from start to finish. Using a cleverly crafted rhyming adaptation, the pupils were able to access and appreciate the brilliance of William Shakespeare at an early age, discovering that his stories, themes, and language remain as compelling today as they were centuries ago. The adaptation preserved the magic and wit of the original play whilst making it engaging and accessible for younger performers, allowing the pupils to develop both understanding and genuine affection for the Bard’s work.

What was particularly striking was the maturity with which Year 5 approached the theatrical process. Inspired by the principles of Jerzy Grotowski and his concept of “poor theatre”, the production deliberately stripped away elaborate distractions and instead placed the emphasis where it truly belongs, on the actor. Without reliance on grand scenery or spectacle, the pupils worked tirelessly on characterisation, vocal clarity, physical storytelling, and ensemble performance. They embraced this challenge magnificently, demonstrating discipline, imagination, and a sophisticated understanding of how theatre can be created through the power of the performer alone.

Each child brought individuality and conviction to their role, crafting characters that were vivid, engaging, and full of life. Their vocal delivery was confident and expressive and their commitment unwavering. The result was a play that felt polished, slick, and remarkably assured. There was a clarity of storytelling and confidence of performance that spoke volumes about their intelligence and willingness to rise to a challenge.

Perhaps most heartening of all was witnessing such a genuine love of Shakespeare at this age. Too often his work is considered inaccessible to the young, yet Year 5 proved quite the opposite. They embraced the humour and humanity of 'The Tempest' with enthusiasm and joy, bringing its timeless themes of forgiveness, freedom, and reconciliation vividly to life. Across two superb performances, this talented year group displayed exceptional teamwork and courage. It was a pleasure to watch and a proud reminder of the remarkable standards being achieved within Drama at Hazlegrove.
