Year 1 Compare Kenya and Somerset

What a truly fantastic week it has been in Year 1! The children have shown such enthusiasm, resilience and pride in everything they have done, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.

In English this week, the children became mini animal experts as they wrote meerkat information reports. They worked hard to include clear subheadings and used generalisers such as ‘all’, ‘most’ and ‘some’ to make their writing sound more informative. The focus and effort they put into their writing was wonderful to see.

In Maths, we have been busy counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and beginning to explore early multiplication and division skills. The children are growing in confidence and are starting to make brilliant links between counting, grouping and sharing.

In Geography, we started an exciting new topic comparing Kenya and Somerset. We thought carefully about the similarities and differences between the two places and even discussed what we might pack in our suitcase if we were to visit Kenya. This sparked some excellent conversations and thoughtful ideas! It also linked nicely to our teams call with David Kinjah in Kenya where we learnt more about his charity work.

The highlight of the week was without doubt our sponsored bike ride to raise money for David’s charity Safari Simbaz. The children were absolutely amazing,  showing determination, teamwork and a real “can‑do” attitude. They tried their very best, encouraged one another and should feel extremely proud of themselves. Well done, Year 1!
