Year 2 Get Messy Investigating Friction

A brand-new month! We’ve had an exciting start filled with creativity, curiosity, and hands‑on learning. The children have been diving into history by stepping into the shoes of Florence Nightingale. We explored her incredible contributions to nursing and her bravery during the Crimean War.  We have used our knowledge to write amazing, imaginative letters pretending to be Florence herself. They included descriptions of life in the Scutari hospital and reflected on caring for injured soldiers. With thoughts about hygiene, courage, and compassion, their writing has been expressive, thoughtful, and full of historical understanding.

In Science, we have been investigating friction in the most fun (and slightly messy!) ways.  This included testing how objects move across oil, and dry surfaces. Predicting which surfaces create more or less friction, the children then had to record their observations. The experiments helped students understand how friction affects motion in real life—and they absolutely loved being hands-on scientists!
