Year 3 New Barn Trip

Stepping back in time to Roman Britain at New Barn was an unforgettable experience!

We were welcomed by Davidus, a Roman slave owner, who gave us a fascinating tour of his home and shared captivating stories about life in ancient times. We discovered that the walls were made by mixing cow dung with chalk, and were amazed to learn that the Romans had underfloor heating, centuries ahead of their time!

Next, we explored Roman medicine. Using grasses and a pestle and mortar, we created a poultice which is a natural remedy used to stop bleeding, much like a modern-day plaster. We also ground corn to make bread and gained insight into the harsh and often gruesome realities faced by both Romans and Celts.

We were incredibly fortunate to enjoy such beautiful weather during our visit, and we are excited to continue our journey into Roman history this term!
