A Wonderful Weekend of Activities For Boarders!

A Wonderful Weekend of Activities For Boarders!

Prep Boarding

Luckily the rain had cleared as soon as we had stepped outside the dining hall on Sunday morning following a hearty full cooked breakfast.

After letter writing, a plethora of activities were available for the boarders to dip into. In the morning, Mr Head’s science room was transformed into a gruesome slime making laboratory, whilst some of the Seniors took on the Great British Bake-Off challenge – this time a technical task to create a three-ingredient cake. The basic ingredients and recipe were given, but with a few key pieces of information missing. The children had to make their own decisions as to which type of flour to use and sugar from the range on offer which made for some interesting (but luckily still edible) results!

Mr Atkinson led another group on a challenging round of Foot Golf around the school grounds with a great array of trick shots on display and Miss Young set the first group off on the skittle alley – one of the top activities of the day and the first time we have had a skittle alley brought into Hazlegrove for the boarders to enjoy. As the morning continued, children had the opportunity to relax in the pop-up café and spa in the common room, compete in their own version of the Ashes (a dice game, luckily with a better score card than recent England batting totals!), and perfected their stacking cup times. Others could be found exploring in the woods, dashing around the Bastion or experimenting with perspective photography – well done Ted for your innovative winning photo!

A cracking Hazlegrove roast dinner was followed by reading, rest and a spot of bird watching as part of the RSPB’s Big Schools’ Bird Watch. Today it was mainly seagulls around the grounds, but a mini murmuration of starlings was spotted along with the odd sparrow and crow. The boarders were most pleased to be back in the pool again in the afternoon and the skittle competition continued in earnest with the trophy being eventually lifted by one of the Year 8 teams. Also, Mr Atkinson shared one of his many talents, as an interesting array of balloon models could be seen appearing from his lab; lanterns, giraffes, light sabres and poodles to name but a few of the balloon creations the children mastered. As the light started to fade the boarders settled down to a film snuggled in the common room sin the late afternoon evening before heading into supper and a quiet evening in the boarding houses. Another busy and fun filled weekend for the boarders, with a little bit of something for everyone!
