Boarders Start Off The Year With An Amazing In Weekend

Covid restrictions have eased, school opened as normal, and the boarding houses were once again filled with happy children.

Our first weekend (In-weekend) together was a roaring success. Saturday afternoon saw a number of our boarders take part in the school Laser Run competition whilst the others enjoyed a plethora of activities on offer – swimming, cycling, rip-sticking, football, dance, art and DT, to name but a few. The reference to dance does not give it justice – the dance was more like a disco, complete with the inflatable cinema screen and our resident DJ SnoopFrogg (aka Mr Froggatt). The bell, at 6pm, summoned hungry tummies to the lawn, where we all enjoyed a BBQ picnic. Movies and treats in the Houses rounded off the day.

Sunday saw the welcome return of the full English – more like a Full English supersized! After a delicious and mammoth plate of food, the children went to Chapel, run by Mr Shaw; it was thought-provoking as ever, and challenged the children to think about their character and how they would like to be seen by others…and themselves. After Chapel, the children headed off to letter writing and this marked the start of the day’s activities. The children enjoyed go-karts, pom-pom making, face-painting, laser tag, gymnastics, golf, football, and even a pool party! Roast lunch was gobbled down with gusto and the children enjoyed a quieter afternoon with a movie and popcorn. The Year 8s went on their traditional 6 mile walk and the stop at the pub for a cold drink, was a much-needed relief in the Somerset heat.

After supper, the children enjoyed a spot of free time before heading to their Houses for a shower and some quiet time and reading before bed.

The weekend was a wonderful example of the HZG boarding community being a family – looking after each other, helping the newbies settle in and having fun with friends. It was the perfect way to start the year and foundations for meaningful and caring friendships have already been forged. Just beautiful!
