Hazlegrove Enjoy a Mexican Themed International Languages Day

Another fantastic celebration of culture and diversity from around the world yesterday as we embarked on our Hazlegrove International Day of Languages. This year we made a deep dive into Mexican history, culture and the Spanish language. We kicked off with an inspiring assembly led by Mrs Wood and our Spanish children, re-telling the history of Mexico through the ages and culminating in the whole school singing Vivir mi Vida, which embraces many of our school values and got us all in the mood for the day ahead. The school was awash with the colours of red, white and green, as we dressed up to represent the Mexican flag and we were treated to a delicious Mexican feast at lunchtime. We created our own fiesta scene in the Fitzjames Hub as the children decorated bunting of cultural Mexican symbols, played la Lotería, watched Coco in Spanish and were snapped in our photo booth with their friends. The Language Department put on taster Spanish lessons and other subjects the children did a range of different cultural activities.  A highlight was stepping into a Geography lesson and learning all about the population density of Mexico compared to the UK!  The cake competition was a huge success, from tacos to flags, to piñatas, they all looked almost too delicious to eat!  We look forward to the results of that and of the quiz next week.  All in all, a great day of celebration and increasing our children’s awareness of another culture, whilst raising money for a very important charity, UNICEF.
