Reception Test Methods to Melt Ice and Rescue Jelly Babies

This week, Reception has been full of curiosity, creativity and brilliant scientific thinking! The children have been busy testing their theories about how to rescue the Jelly Baby Family from the Evil Freezer. We explored a variety of methods to see what might help free them safely. From using the warmth of the sun (or lack thereof), to experimenting with the microwave, trying out hammers (very carefully!) and even sprinkling salt, the children were completely absorbed in discovering what worked best.

After all our investigations, we wrote a letter back to Traction Man to share our findings. The children gave thoughtful advice on which methods kept the jelly babies safe and which ones were a little too risky. We also loved braving the wintry weather during Forest School as we began our Big Birdwatch. The children showed great enthusiasm as we spotted and discussed different native British birds. Their excitement as they began to recognise robins, crows and the common pigeon was lovely to see, and they’re already becoming fantastic bird experts.
