Year 1 Explore the Night Sky

What a fantastic week in Year 1!
We have been diving into the delightful story The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. The children loved following Plop, the little owl who was nervous about the dark, and discovering how he overcame his fears with the help of new friends. By the end, Plop was brave enough to enjoy the beauty of the night sky! This sparked wonderful conversations about our own fears and how we can be courageous too. We learnt to write speech and to develop an understanding of how characters might think and feel.

We have been exploring addition and subtraction fact families. The children learnt how numbers are connected and how knowing one fact can help us find others. For example, if 4 + 3 = 7, then 7 – 4 = 3! It has been exciting to see them spotting patterns and building confidence with number facts.
We became little scientists and investigated how shadows move with the sun. The children observed shadows at different times of the day and recorded their findings. They were amazed to see how the sun’s position changes the length and direction of shadows, what a great way to connect learning to the world around us!
