Nursery Enjoy Making a Scarecrow
The Nursery children have been full of curiosity and creativity this week. We joined together with Pre-School to learn about scarecrows; we gathered all sorts of materials from plant pots, old clothes, straw, sticks and leaves to build our own friendly scarecrow, ready for Harvest Festival. It was a wonderful sensory experience as they explored textures, helped with stuffing and decorating and giggled at the wobbly arms and big floppy hat! We also talked about how scarecrows help farmers and keep the crops safe.
Having picked the blackberries from the Hazlegrove hedgerows, the children rolled up their sleeves and got a little sticky making homemade blackberry jam! The children helped squash the berries, stir the mixture, and add the sugar. They watched them bubble in the oven and we talked about it being very hot. We then poured it into little pots to take home. It was a rich sensory experience – full of smells, colours, and tastes. They were so proud of their creations, and we loved seeing their proud faces as they took it home. Mr and Mrs Benbow sent the Nursery children a thank you note and photo of them having their jam on toast for breakfast, which led to much chatting about eating their own jam and what they had for breakfast.
