Middle School Maths Morning

On a gloriously sunny Monday morning, Years  5 and 6 embarked on an epic morning of maths challenges for the Middle School Maths Morning. The Middle School  children were divided into ten mixed ability teams (all named after famous mathematicians) and they spent the whole morning racing between five very different maths activity stations.  At the first station, they pitted their wits against each other in the Mr Potato Head maths quiz, at the second station they learnt how to estimate, and then accurately measure, the capacity of a wacky selection of objects (from wellington boots to watering cans). At the third station they were tasked with decoding a secret message to discover where Mr Shaw had hidden a special wooden box containing a valuable rubber stamp. At the fourth station they had some fun gambling away their fortune (or a cup of twenty 1p pieces) as they explored a variety of probability puzzles. Then the final station was school-wide treasure hunt which saw them running back and forth across the whole campus searching for and then solving a series of multiple-choice maths conundrums.

It was a superb morning of active and fun maths for all the children, and it was lovely to see them all working together so well as they tackled each new challenge.

In the end it was team Babbage who won the treasure hunt, and team Faraday who triumphed over all with a staggering 48.5/50.

Well done everyone.
