Nursery Explore Farm Animals

The future of Somerset farming is in good hands thanks to the Nursery children being "Down on the Farm!" The messy play is beginning as the children made muddy pigs with curly tales and scrubbed the farm animals clean with toothbrushes, practising the physical skills of using a one handed tool.  Once the animals were clean, the children focused on herding our sheep back into their pens, moving to the music and batting the sheep balloons about. Hazle, our giant Highland cow, has been a wonderful piece of process art inspired by the Hazlegrove cows. The children used texture to develop their sense of touch and support new vocabulary - such as ‘soft’, ‘shiny’, ‘sparkly’, ‘rough’ and ‘scratchy’. Working together around the table to decorate Hazle provided opportunities for personal and social development as the children shared the fabrics and passed the glue.  Our farm learning has linked to our ‘Pig in the Pond’ and ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ stories this week, where children have all joined in with the animal noises - great for developing all the speech sounds!
