Year 6 Art Workshop at King's Bruton
Fifteen Hazlegrove Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fun and inspiring creative arts day at King's School, Bruton. Along with other local schools, the pupils participated in a carousel of activities throughout the day.
Our pupils were the first to try their hand at silversmithing in a fabulous outdoor setting beneath a shady oak tree. They were each given a strip of aluminium (rather than real silver!) and shown how to hammer it repeatedly to create a textured, undulating appearance. They then used letter stamps to inscribe a name or message, before carefully bending the metal strip into a bracelet. Most had time to make two bracelets, and their jewellery looked truly professional!
After break, we escaped the heat and headed indoors to the impressive music hall and drama space for an acting workshop. Led by two very talented Lower Sixth boys, the pupils learnt the art of Italian Renaissance-era comedic theatre, known as commedia dell'arte. They had great fun working independently and in groups, taking on the roles of different characters, improvising comedic scenes, and designing masks.
The final activity after lunch took place in the art department’s textiles room. Here, pupils were tasked with repurposing a plain white shirt into something more designer. This eco-fashion-focused workshop encouraged pupils to think about how fabrics can be cut, altered, and redesigned in imaginative ways. It also prompted them to reflect on the amount of fabric waste in the world.
A fantastic day was had by all, and we must thank Seamus Harkness and his brilliant team at King's for their hard work in organising and delivering this inspiring experience.
