Jackson Pollock Workshop

Our 'Festival of Colour' day provided an ideal opportunity to create two large collaborative paintings inspired by the process of the iconic American abstract expressionist painter, Jackson Pollock. Two 3.5 metre long rolls of paper were prepared on the art room floor and Middle School pupils were invited to don an apron and drip diluted paint by walking around the surface guiding the direction of marks through their actions, such as moving their arms. Pupils were excited by the loose process of semi-controlling the fluidity of the paint, and they had so much fun building up the layers of different colours. Where wet colours combined and pooled, they began to mix and marble which created fascinating effects. The large paintings dominated the art room floor until they dried (three days!) and the event provided a good talking point in lessons. We look forward to displaying them soon.
