Pre-School Spot Colours in the School Grounds
We have been enjoying the Julia Donaldson story “The Rhyming Rabbit” this week, which has included lots of wonderful rhyming. We have been very impressed with the children’s ability to rhyme and identify rhyming objects they can find. Using small world resources, we have been talking about the animals that were in the story and using the resources to retell in our own words. We have also used these animals to recognise numerals and identify amounts without counting-subitising. Using watercolours, we have been inspired to explore the illustrations of another famous rabbit, Peter. We have talked about the shapes used to create his image along with the colours and details, the children have produced some wonderful watercolour paintings.
On Tuesday, we hopped off into the woods to hunt for some ingredients to create our own rabbit food; we worked in pairs and used impressive turn taking when using the scissors. Holding them safely as we walked, we identified natural objects of different colours and textures for our rabbit food. Once we returned to Pre-School, we used some fantastic vocabulary to talk about what we could see in the pot before we mixed and scooped it into bowls for the Rhyming Rabbit. Having visited our resident bunnies, we decided they also needed some treats and talked about what they might enjoy. We used tools safely to peel and chop a range of different vegetables before we washed them. Lots of children enjoyed trying the different foods and could talk about what they tasted like. Finally, we took our own rabbit food mix over to the bunnies and carefully treated them to some tasty treats.
In forest school, we went on a colour walk and used a checklist to find lots of objects that were different colours in the woods and grounds. We have also enjoyed spending time outside this week in the sunshine where we have been exploring the digging area and creating some wonderful paintings on a large scale, whilst cooperating with our friends to share the resources. On Thursday, we all planted some seeds and could talk confidently about what the seeds needed to grow- we will check on our seeds daily and talk about the changes we have observed.
