Pre-School Make Stick Families

We have had such a wonderful week in Pre-School enjoying the classic Julia Donaldson story, ‘Stick Man’. We went on a stick hunt through the woods to find some suitable sticks to make our own Stick Families- we talked about what we would need and made sure to pick sticks of suitable length for different members of the family. On our way through the woods, we spotted our first sign of Spring- some beautiful snowdrops which everyone enjoyed finding. We have been impressed by the children’s recall of the story and have enjoyed listening to them apply their knowledge into retelling the story using props and puppets.

On Wednesday afternoon, we used pretzels and chocolate to make our own edible stick people- we counted out 1 body, 2 arms, 2 legs and 2 eyes before assembling; we had talked about what we could use to join the pieces together and the children came up with some inventive suggestions! Once the Stick Men were dry, everyone enjoyed them for snack.

Using foraged sticks, we have been practising our counting and focussing on the number 8, we have been exploring one more and one less using objects and touch counting. Someone made the link between Octo-Block and the number 8 which led to a discussion about octopus and octagons.

Thursday was the opportunity for a walk in the winter sunshine and enjoy a Stick Man hunt on the field. Stick Man had hidden his friends all over the field and we needed to help him find his friends, which we did!

We look forward to seeing you next week for the fine and gross motor workshop on Wednesday.
