Last Saturday, 19 Hazlegrove athletes competed in the Somerset County Cross Country Championships.

They all raced superbly and we were very proud of them all. The course at Aldon Hill is spectacular and a true cross country test – long distances, hills, tracks and great parkland.   All of the athletes from across Somerset had qualified for this event by finishing in the top 20 at their respective area championships. The fields of athletes were strong and in some cases there were over 80 competitors in a race.  Everyone was aiming for a top 10 finish and a place in the Somerset team that will represent the county in two weeks’ time at the South West Championships in Bath.

In the Year 7 races Hazlegrove dominated and we were thrilled to have 1st (Skye F) and 2nd (Imogen W) in the girls race and 2nd (Hal S), 3rd (Charlie G), 4th (Gray S) and 8th (Ben L) in the boys race.  In the junior races our Year 8’s were competing against Year 9’s and again acquitted themselves well.  In the girls Lucy S finished 9th and in the boys race Josh C finished 5th and Philip M 6th.

All of our boys and girls competed very well and demonstrated huge talent.  We are thrilled and extremely proud to have nine children selected to compete for Somerset along with three reserves (Xander H, Anna I and Emily W).  It is always encouraging to so many ex Hazlegrovians continuing to compete at this level and we were delighted to hear that a further four ex pupils have also been selected for the county team.

Good luck for next Saturday.

Mrs Cobb
