What an exciting festival week it has been! The Dragonflies began their week by answering the question, ‘Where are dinosaurs now?’.

On Monday the children explored what dinosaurs look like today and why. They began their lesson by reading ‘Are dinosaurs real?’. The Dragonflies found out that dinosaurs lived on the earth millions of years ago. Then, a big space rock crashed into the earth, and they all died. They were then buried with soil, clay, mud and rocks and turned into fossils. We explored some fossils and decided what animal we thought resembled the pattern on the stone. The children then had the opportunity to create their very own dinosaur fossil using salt dough.

While exploring extinct animals, the children also found out that some animals might disappear today if we do not take care of them. The Dragonflies spoke about how the bees are very important for our planet and without them, our flowers would not grow, and other animals would not have any food to eat. The children came up with a range of ideas to save the bees, such as, feeding them oranges and sugary water, while also planting flowers for them to drink the nectar and pollinate other flowers. The children then made their own wildflower seed bombs to take home and plant in their garden. To conclude the week, the Dragonflies explored a sensory tuff tray to explore plants and what they could be used for. They learnt aloe is good for the skin, lavender can be used to make perfumes, vegetables are good for our body and flowers feed the bees and butterflies.

To celebrate our Eco festival week, the Ladybirds and Butterflies have been focusing on Wildlife and finding out things they can do to help our planet. The children all brought in their recycling from home and have been using it to make new things. This has included creating homes for a variety of wildlife, such as bee hotels from tins, bird nesting homes from old milk cartons and a wormery. We planted sunflower seeds, and beans in preparation for the summer to attract the bees and explored worms in a pile of compost.

To follow up the children's interest in cars, the children have used their junk to create cars and in the role play area we have had a mechanic role play. We talked about electric cars and how they are better for our environment.

At the end of the week, the children became bin lorry workers. They worked together in their giant junk model bin lorry to collect all the rubbish and sort it into the correct boxes.
