Prep art and dt

Pupils have been full of energy and enthusiasm for their art lessons since they have returned from the Easter break.

Even though the sun is not yet shining, and a lingering chill persists, spirits in the art room refuse to be dampened and pupils remain excited about their summer art projects for this term!

Lower School have got straight back into the swing of things with Year 3 beginning an Art / DT cross-curricular 'shell' project involving drawing designs, hand-modelling a scallop shell out of clay and vacuum forming this in the workshop to create a mould. The children will certainly learn many new key processes over the next few weeks, and we look forward to seeing their creative outcomes! Year 4 have already started to produce art pieces for their upcoming Egyptian themed exhibition; cartouches, canopic jars and atmospheric paintings are the order of the day for Year 4s this term!

The Year 5 groups can look forward to making decorative 'junk robots' using 100% recycled materials. This is a really fun project that gets children constructing, collaborating and problem solving whilst creating a truly original sculpture. Year 6s are learning about the Pop Art movement and will create their own 3D piece inspired by the soft sculptures of Claes Oldenberg and paintings of Wayne Thiebaud.

The Upper School continue to be really motivated and inspired in art and have been keen to get going on practical pieces. Year 7s are now onto their final project of the year which focusses on portraiture - a difficult but important theme in art. Pupils will start by creating self-portraits and then move on to looking at the different styles and themes that emerged in the twentieth century. Finally, Year 8 are looking to end the year on a high and they are working on individual Pop Art inspired 'cake slice' ceramic pieces which will be colour glazed once constructed. We are also looking forward to displaying a selection of their artwork at the Music, Art & DT showcase event in May.
