Years 3, 4 and 6 had a very informative visit from two members of the A303 dualling project team, on Friday.

Samuel Landrigan, Communications Manager for Galliford Try Highways, and Nicola Sugden, their Environmental Co-ordinator, gave up their time to help us understand the ins and outs of the scheme better.

Firstly, they looked at why the road is being dualled, and the broader plans for the A303.  Secondly, they talked us through all they have done to protect various species, from bats, to newts to dormice, and how much time and energy has been devoted to trying to minimise disruption and re-house / relocate them when possible.

It was fascinating to hear just how much is now required legally, and how much the project has been delayed by needing to take these important environmental responsibilities seriously. It was also very interesting to hear how much the dry weather in the summer and the wet weather more recently has affected progress.

Finally, Sam and Nicola answered our pupils’ questions and there were LOTS of them!  It took over 45 minutes to answer all Year 6’s questions, for example!  We were delighted with the quality of the questions they were asking, their ability to weigh up pros and cons and see things from different people’s perspectives and we’re very grateful to our guests for being willing to answer so many questions so ably and thoroughly.

All in all, a very worthwhile experience indeed.
