Prep Maths

On Friday 17 January four brave mathematicians (Sarah H, Katie L, Wilbur G and Dino B) competed in the Year 6 Bryanston Maths Challenge.

The challenge consists of three fiercely competitive rounds. The four eager mathematicians from Hazlegrove were split into pairs to battle against the 60 other pairs from the 31 different schools. The first round was called Find the Value, which involved a little logic and some experimentation as they substituted possible values into a selection of algebraic expressions until the correct solution was found. The second round was call Target Number in which the young mathematicians had to use the five numbers they were given to match a given large target number, using either multiplication, division, addition or subtraction (similar to the popular show – Countdown). Then, finally, they had to face The Big Event, which really taxed them with a series of progressively more difficult maths word problems.

Our four mathematicians did incredibly well and were excellent mathematical ambassadors for Hazlegrove. I was delighted to see them working really hard, with a break, for two hours, right up to the final whistle. In the end our two teams came 16th and 20th out of 62.

A most enjoyable and challenging afternoon of maths.
