Prep Trips

A misty start to the morning made Year 3s trip to the Roman Villa at The Newt even more magical!

No VR headsets were in sight for the school's experience, instead, our experience was led by The Newt’s very own resident Romans were in full regalia. We started the morning exploring the ancient ruins under the museum before splitting into small groups to prepare for a dinner party. Using the exhibits in the museum, the children had to select the appropriate tableware, decide the guestlist, organise some entertainment and paint (virtually) murals for the Villa.

The tour of the Villa itself was a real treat. The children marvelled at the different rooms, each one offering a snapshot of what it would have been like to live at the site 2000 years ago. The attention to detail is remarkable! The children dipped their fingers in the baths and even formed a choir to entertain the guests for the dinner party; Alfie was very at home lounging on the chaise lounge, whilst Iris oversaw the whole spectacle.

Before departing, the Year 3s had the opportunity to handle some Roman artefacts, design and create mosaics and had the challenge of uncovering broken pottery and then rebuilding the pots to their original form in the barn. On the meandering stroll back through the estate, we didn’t manage to spot any deer,  but there were some squirrels to be seen dashing about!  It was a grand, informative day out for the children; we are very lucky to have such a uniquely wonderful resource right on our doorstep.
