PrePrep Pre-Prep

Mrs Jenkins writes on behalf of Miss Strugnell:

The Pre-Prep was filled with the smell of gingerbread baking and the sound of singing this week as the children practised for their Harvest assembly. On Wednesday, they put on an incredible Harvest assembly performance with songs, poems and dances performed with stage voices and happy faces! The children were greeted with cheers and applause from the audience, making their teachers and family members very proud! A huge thank you for all the generous food donations for The Lord’s Larder in Yeovil.

Next week we have parent-teacher meetings, Year 1 and 2 parents’ morning on Wednesday, and of course apple day on Friday.  Please can all children bring in an apple for this fun activity day! The bigger the better!

In the Nursery classroom, all of the children have been participating in 'train' themed activities. The Butterflies have been creating their own trains using sponges and paint, whilst the older children have been thinking about where they would go if they travelled on a magic train.  We were all so proud of our Dragonflies and Ladybirds, who performed so beautifully at the Harvest assembly this week.

There has been an Autumnal feel in Reception class this week and we have embraced the seasonal change across all of our areas of learning. On Monday it was wonderful to welcome so many parents and grandparents into the classroom so that they could share and take part in the amazing learning the children are doing. In English we have read the story ‘Stone Soup’ and the children have thought about the wonderful things that can be achieved when everyone works together. They wrote shopping lists and created their own recipe booklets. On Thursday they made their very own hearty soup (no stones allowed!). It was wonderful to see the children carefully chopping the vegetables, adding the herbs and stock – the soup was delicious and there was enough for us all. Yum!

From guinea pigs to gingerbread men, we have spanned a whole range of topics this week in Year 1! We baked our own delicious gingerbread men, linking to our story of the Gingerbread man before innovating our own alternative endings. From super speedy Gingerbread men running away from the sly fox to helicopters who rescued the poor biscuit, we created all manner of endings. In Science we came up with different ways to classify animals, meeting our own furry guinea pig friends to see some mammal features! In Maths we worked on adding by counting on and learnt to add and take away tens.

Cakes, cakes, cakes! Inspired by a Katie Morag story “The baking day secret”, Year 2 children were lucky enough to enjoy some delicious birthday cakes, inspiring their writing and getting the creative juices flowing. The wonderfully detailed descriptions had us all thinking about the many different things we like to eat for a special treat. The afternoon tea ideas the children created, were beautifully described. Being thankful for our food and the people who harvest it shone through in our harvest gathering on Wednesday. All the children performed with their poems, songs and dances with confidence, it was lovely to see so many smiling faces.
