Pre-Prep PrePrep

This week the Ladybirds and Butterflies have continued their topic on growing, this time through investigation of seeds and insects.

After reading 'That's My Flower' which follows the story of a squirrel’s who discovers a flower but doesn't know the correct way to care for it, the children discovered a tray of various fruits and vegetables. We discussed how and where they would have grown. The children then helped to cut them open and discovered an array of seeds, ranging from tiny pepper seeds to large beans. The children used their mathematical skills to compare sizes and estimate how many seeds were inside.

After becoming familiar with how to plant and care for seeds, the children planted something special for their Mummies, just in time for Mother's Day.

Later in the week, we read 'The Hungry Caterpillar' and on a sunny Wednesday, the children were delighted to discover some real caterpillars munching on the leaves of the Hazlegrove hedges along with some hungry Ladybirds.

The Dragonflies have shown a particular interest in dinosaurs and on Monday they went on a dinosaur hunt throughout the Pre-Prep playground. The children developed their use of positional language by explaining where they had found the dinosaurs, under the bench, on top of the shed and behind the pirate ship. Throughout the weeks, the Dragonflies have been exploring the life cycle of plants and had the opportunity this week to explore the life cycle of the dinosaurs. The children even compared it to our life cycle and found some similarities and differences.

The Dragonflies are continuing to develop their number recognition and counting skills. They used these skills by adding spikes onto an ordinary dinosaur to turn it into a stegosaurus.

Finally, towards the end of the week, the children dressed up as their favourite book character for World Book Day and had the opportunity to meet an author!
