Prep Boarding

A brilliant winter weekend here at Hazlegrove. It was a weekend that offered off-site entertainment, as well as creativity here at School in the art room, a good old fashioned nerf war and a falconry display.

After the traditional Sunday lie-in, some boarding house time catching up on the World Cup and some Mario-kart in the junior boys, we had our hearty full English. We were treated to a thought-provoking chapel from Rev Beverley emphasising the importance of kindness and including some festive carols.

The junior boarders got a real treat heading out with Mr and Mrs Benbow to Sherborne Castle Gardens for a Christmassy walk topped off by a steaming hot chocolate. The seniors stayed for some onsite activities. The multi-talented Miss Gillow treated the seniors to a master class in screen printing as they created some individualised bags. I am sure you will be seeing some of these come Christmas day!

Meanwhile it was a war of attrition in the sports hall in the form of a nerf war. Team Froggatt vs Team Atkinson in a battle of the ages. There was lots of sweat and a few tears (from Mr Atkinson) as the children (and adults) ran around from barricade to barricade in search of the other team’s flag. Serious tactics, feints and psychological warfare were all employed. It was certainly one of those activities where it was unclear who had enjoyed it more, the teachers or the children.

After a hearty lunch we all had some well-earned rest and reading followed by some free time. We were then treated to a super display of birds of prey from Pitcombe Rock Falconry. Alan is amazingly knowledgeable and the birds are truly majestic. Not only did the children get some close encounters but the owls and falcons seemed to enjoy flying around the sports hall just as much as our children. One very grumpy tawny owl liked it so much, he was still in the rafters even after we had supper.

I am always thrilled and a rather proud of how well our children comport themselves over the day. They are fun and engaging to be around and slept well last night after bagels and a film in their houses.
