History

How can I describe Rome? Romantic. Timeless. Congested. Enchanted. The people? Driven. Smart. Brutal. The architecture?  Breath-taking.

The Year 3s and Year 7s were transported back 500 years in time to answer these questions and more about ancient Rome and Roman history. Both year groups were treated to two fascinating talks from the historical fiction author and former veterinarian Ben Kane. Ben has written many books set in the Roman period. Including the Hannibal and Rome series to the Eagles of Rome, which is based on real events in Germany.

The Year 7s focused on the Roman army, with Ben sparing no detail. He covered everything from famous battles to daily life in a Roman army camp. He added further authenticity to his talk through the use of numerous weapons and artefacts which entertained and shocked us all in equal measure! The Year 3s explored daily life for the Romans. This covered everything from where people lived, what they did for employment and entertainment to food and drink.

A fascinating afternoon was had by all with many of the children now inspired to go and explore the period further!

"Ben gave us lots more facts about the Romans" Grace

"I think that Roman times were horrific because people could be sold as slaves and their owners treated them so badly. I also thought that people throwing their toilet waste onto the streets, which could land on other people’s heads, is really disgusting!" Alexander

"I was really surprised to learn from Ben that the fathers could beat his own child to death! Thank goodness things have changed now!" William

"He was amazing and funny" Bella
