On a frosty but radiant Monday morning all of the children in Year 3 and 4 were grouped into ten mixed ability teams (each named after famous mathematicians) in anticipation of the Lower School Maths Activity Morning.

Excused from their normal lessons, the children competed at five very different maths stations scattered around the school in an incredibly busy morning of practical and hands-on maths. They raced around searching for clues on the Tortuous Treasure Hunt, they battled against the odds in Batty Bingo, they put their heads together in Estimation Agony, they rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in on the Wacky Water challenges and finally they tried their hand at Something Fishy or the Shape Chase.

It was a really terrific morning and I was enormously impressed by how hard all the children worked and how seriously they took each of the quite stretching mathematical challenges. They demonstrated determination, excellent team work and resourcefulness which are vital qualities for any mathematician.

In the end team Descartes completed the Treasure Hunt in the fastest time but team Reimann won the competition overall with a very impressive score of 45/50.

Well done everyone!

Mr Shaw.
