Boarders' 'big painting' challenge...

Boarders' 'big painting' challenge...

Boarding

This was a surprisingly successful weekend given the somewhat unfavourable weather. With wet cricket and rounders fixtures on Saturday afternoon, the Art and Design centre was buzzing and the children not playing in matches were grateful for some ‘down’ time after such a busy start to the term.

Sunday beckoned and after an entertaining Chapel service from Mr Beverley, the children were briefed on the challenge ahead by Mr Floyd. The 55 boarders were split into six groups of different aged children, led by Year 8 ‘Chiefs’. Each group would pick a famous painting which would then be split into nine segments. Every member of the group would paint their segment and by the end of the day, the painting would be constructed and displayed for judging. Well……you have never seen such a big group of children so focused, calm and creative. The Year 8s were fabulous and supportive whilst the younger children took the challenge head on and produced some extraordinary art work, eventually collaborating with each other to construct the masterpiece. They were all brilliant.

In the afternoon, we got some fresh air, swam, built bonfires and played rounders. At 4pm, Mrs Floyd spoke about each group’s artwork, followed by Mr Floyd who announced the overall winner. Team Pugh won the day! An ice cream was the prize!

All in all it was one of those days that left us all in a terrifically good mood thanks to the wonderful reception and attitude of the children. They really are creative geniuses/genii.
