Middle School Maths Morning

As the fog cleared and the promised sun dried up the morning dew Year 5 and 6 embarked on their annual Middle School Maths Morning. A morning packed to the brim with new maths challenges designed to test and extend all those mathematical skills that they have been learning and working so hard on in their maths lessons. They were divided into ten mixed ability teams, all named after famous female mathematicians, and they spent the morning at five different maths activity stations set up around the school. At one station they learnt how to use a navigational compass as they retraced the footsteps of bank robbers in search of buried diamonds. At another station they raced against the clock to reach 10 target numbers using only a limit variety of smaller numbers (a bit like Countdown). Then they learnt all about the properties of 2D shapes in the frantic ‘Shape Chase’ competition. After that they battled, in their teams, through a series of capacity and volume puzzles beside the swimming pool. Then, finally, their estimation skills were really put to the test in the popular but very tricky ‘Estimation Agony’ challenge.

All-in-all it was a superb morning of maths, and it was lovely to see the children working so well together and putting so much effort into their maths - while also having a great deal of fun.

In the end it was team Evelyn Granville won – CONGRATULATIONS!
