Exciting Senses Activities for Year 1

Year 1 have been working hard this week in writing, innovating their Three Billy Goats Gruff stories. The children created some wonderful new characters, including slow sloths, angry bees and springer spaniels! The children have been using time openers such as first, next, after that and finally to retell their stories confidently to their friends. They have shown fantastic imaginations, and we are very proud of how enthusiastic everyone has been about creating their own stories.

In Maths, we have been embedding our knowledge of number lines and practising completing number tracks using pictures, numerals and words. We have also been developing our understanding of mathematical language, including more and less, and then using this vocabulary to answer a range of problem-solving questions.

In Science, we have been exploring our senses through a variety of exciting activities. We took part in taste tests, experiencing different flavours, including sweet, sour, salty and bitter. We also enjoyed a barefoot sensory trail, where we discussed the different textures we could feel, such as rough, smooth, bumpy and spiky. The children showed great curiosity and used appropriate vocabulary to explain their experiences.

Our swimming lesson this week has focused on back crawl, with lots of opportunities to practise our long kicking legs. Mrs Cox is very impressed with everyone's efforts.
