At Hazlegrove our boarders are the heartbeat of the school and with our thriving community of both full boarders as well as flexi boarders, at least one third of the Prep School are boarding at any one time. Many of our boarding families choose Hazlegrove on the strength of personal recommendations from past and current pupils. 

We offer an exciting full weekend programme of activities that take place both on and off site including trips to water parks, the beach, fishing trips, exhibitions and museums, zorb balls, disco domes, tree climbing not to mention our very own Go-Kart track and outdoor pizza oven!

Boarding at Hazlegrove provides a home-from-home for the children within a family focussed, supportive and inclusive community. It’s of paramount importance to us that your children feel safe and happy staying here. Our Boarding Ethos

Pastoral care is key to the strength and overall success of the boarding at Hazlegrove; it is at the heart of everything that we do.

Our boarding staff meet every week to discuss the welfare of our boarders supported by continual communication with tutors and staff. 

Pastoral care is underpinned by the philosophy that each and every child should be parented – every day! In other words, children should not go through a day without an adult showing an interest in them and expressing a genuine concern for them. They all deserve to have an adult involved in guiding them and being a positive role model to them. We achieve this by having a large number of adults on duty in and around the Houses every day.

We are in a privileged position to have at least four adults (up to six on some nights), working in each boarding house every night; and we have an additional ten members of staff who live on site who are fully involved and committed to the boarders time at Hazlegrove. We all believe in promoting childhood and making sure that the children have a magical time whilst at Hazlegrove. 

Communication is key and our “family-feel” encourages dialogue between all the adults involved with the care of the children. We would like parents to feel that they are a part of the boarding journey and that we work together to enrich the lives of the children in our care.

A Home Away From Home

The sense of family is an integral part of all that we do here and being a full boarding school creates a very special and unique environment for children to live. With lots of family style interaction on a daily basis, such as older children reading to our younger boarders and helping them at meal times, the feeling of being part of one big family is in everything that we do.  

Wellbeing

The well being of all of the children in our care is our top priority and for those who live on site, it is particularly important. We have a Circle of Care, and our pastoral care includes a buddy system, kindness nominations, a nurture room and quiet spaces throughout the school, suggestion box, food committee, treasure groups that teach resilience and bravery, team challenges, in-weekends where all of the children bond together, garden spaces, staff pets and the school farm, and of course the boarding essential - regular hot chocolate! 

Inspection

The boarding was last inspected as part of the Integrated ISI Inspection in the Summer Term, 2023. We were delighted that the school was considered to be outstanding in all areas of judgement. Click here for more information and a link to the inspection report.
