Good Causes

Raising money for charity at Hazlegrove

Hazlegrove staff, pupils and parents do much to help various charitable causes.  Recent efforts include:

MacMillan Coffee Morning

Hazlegrove parents support MacMillan Coffee Morning

A big thank you to everyone who supported the recent Macmillan Coffee Morning.  We raised a total of £276.05 which is a great effort.  It was lovely to see all the fabulous cakes and lots of new faces.  Here’s hoping that someone will step forward to organise this next year as we will have moved onto Kings.

Christmas Cards

In the weeks before Christmas we sold Hazlegrove Charity Christmas Cards and wrapping paper. Each child contributed a festive picture which Character Graphics of Taunton kindly digitized and combined; the effect of all these images together is absolutely charming.

We raised over £3,000 for St Margaret’s Hospice.  Many thanks to Character Graphics, not only for their electronic wizardry, but for printing all the cards and paper free of charge. Thanks also to all the other parents and staff involved in creating and selling the cards and paper.

Schoolchildren for children fun run

Schoolchilren for children fun run

On Friday 18 September all the pupils and a large number of staff and parents set off on a mile long fun run. Mrs Cobb got everyone moving with an energetic warm up and then we were off. As you can see from the photographs in the Front Hall and on the website, a fun time was had by all from babies in prams to grandparents. We raised £487, thank you all for your participation and generosity.

Stamps

You may have seen in the local papers that we have given 100,000 stamps to St Margaret’s Hospice. They have written back with grateful thanks, which I pass on to you who have been so assiduous.

We have started a system where we ‘cherry pick’ all the very unusual stamps and keep them separate. We now have a map of the world in my room which we are marking to show where all the stamps come from. Should you go to somewhere really remote, would you be kind enough to send me a letter with stamps on or just collect a few and pass them on.

The parents who have formed ‘pyramid systems’ to garner even more stamps are truly angels. Well done - keep collecting.

SOS, Africa

An ex-Hazlegrove pupil runs a charity, sosafrica.com, to fund the education of township children in South Africa. We are providing a clothes drop off point for them outside the Art Room. Any unwanted children’s clothes would be much appreciated.

Wessex Walk

In May the children took part in the Wessex Walk from Shaftesbury to Salisbury. The children were fortunate enough that the weather was extremely sunny and all the children completed the 15 miles. We raised £638 for Save the Children; thank you for all those who took part and for the parents and staff who helped.

Year 6 Charity Tea Parties

The Year 6 charity tea parties were a great success again this year, thank you all for coming. We raised £776.48 for SCANN, which works to help the street children of Kenya.

Below are a few comments from some of the Year 6 girls.

  • Tilda:  “At first break we came in to lay our tables.  It was really fun doing the flower arrangements and folding the napkins.  It was a fantastic event for a good cause.”
  • Rachel:  “The children set up the tables and stalls for the event.  The food was delicious and everyone had a great time!”
  • Ellie:  “First we greeted people.  We had three plates, one with gingerbread and scones on and one with cup cakes and shortbread and one with sandwiches on and we had tea.”

Carol Service

The collection from our Carol Service raised £1558.56 for the Pilsdon community Thank you all for your generous donations.

Poppy Appeal

Thank you to all who contributed to our Poppy appeal.  We raised £197.24 between the Pre-Prep and Prep School.

Mufti day

Mufti day for Fireworks Night raised £295.60 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.  Many thanks for all your generosity.

Save the Children

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in our tournament last term. We raised £1200.  Well done to Elena C, Maddie B, Tim K and Henry F who got through to the semi final stages of the Regional Tournament held in Exmouth.

Harvest Festival

Thank you to all parents and children for all you did to make harvest festival so special for us. We had a variety of produce and delicious cakes to sell and raised £168.00 for Water Aid.(www.wateraid.org).

Christmas Shoe Boxes

As a school, we are keen for the pupils to be aware of the need to support others who are not as well off as themselves.  In Year 5 in PSHE, we hope that each child will fill a shoe box of things that a child can enjoy for Christmas; they do not need to be new things.  Your child will bring a leaflet home soon which will explain this project further.   Thank you for your help with this.  Katie Fenwick.

Sport Relief fun run

The Hazlegrove community joined together to run a mile for Sport Relief. The weather held and parents, friends and pupils enthusiastically joined in running, skipping, walking the route which this year went through the woods. Congratulations and a huge thank you to all who took part helping us to raise over £960 for Sport Relief.

Talent Show to Raise Money for Haiti

In January 2010 a catastrophic earthquake hit the small island of Haiti. Due to this, a group of Year 8 students decided to hold a ‘Hazlegrove Talent Show’ to raise money for the victims of this unfortunate event. Some 24 acts took part in this show varying from diabolo to acrobatics combined with many dance, drama and music routines. This proved to be an amazing night and as well as raising over £1,200, it also showed the enormous talent within the school.
