The Hazlegrove Music Department is exciting and vibrant, full of energy and enthusiasm.  It’s a great place to make music!

Children are encouraged to take up an instrument from an early age and there are many opportunities to perform in our regular Friday evening concerts.  As soon as the children achieve a degree of competency on their instrument they are encouraged to join one of the many ensembles. Where appropriate, children are prepared for the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory examination and for music scholarship auditions at senior schools.

The purpose-built music department has seven teaching/practice rooms and a large, well-equipped classroom. We also have a well-equipped theatre which is used on a regular basis for concerts.

The curriculum is carefully designed and completely cross-curricular. The National Curriculum for Music is also covered in all aspects of classroom music and every child is encouraged to take up a musical instrument or sing in one of the choirs. All pupils from Nursery to Year 8 have class music timetabled each week and we include composition and technology towards Year 8.

Concerts

There are several informal concerts each term which provide a platform for everyone having individual music lessons to perform, whether they are absolute beginners or scholars. We also have larger, more formal concerts every term giving plenty of opportunity for our ensembles and choirs to perform.

We also encourage chamber music and opportunities for the children to play in concert with their teachers. We offer this as an important learning step in the context of gaining confidence through performance.
