A ronnd up of all the latest sports news as we head into half term...

Judo

This year Hazlegrove have entered the three separate IAPS National Judo tournaments and it was the turn of our younger boys on Saturday 13 May. We had 5 boys from Year 3 to 5 taking part and they all learned a great deal from the experience of competing at such a high level. We were delighted that Dino B returned with a bronze medal and the day was about so much more than just that. Mr Gleeson, our school Judo coach said: "I am extremely proud of all of them. They have proved themselves worthy and are now fully fledged judo players!"

Cricket

The cricket season is well under way and both the boys and the girls have been playing some excellent cricket. It has been so rewarding to see how the passion for this sport develops throughout the school years, with our 1st XI leading the way.  We have had a number of very notable performances with Harry F (56), Josh C (81), Isaac B (50), Donald C (82*), Dylan M (50*), Tom P (50*) and Ben F (52*) all hitting half centuries so far this term and James W (100*) getting an incredible century. Both Joseph P and James W have taken 5 wickets in a match whilst bowling.

Rounders

Both in games lessons and in free time this is a sport that is so loved by the children of Hazlegrove. School matches have been enjoyed by all of the girls and we have many fixtures to look forward to after half term. A special mention should go to the three 1st IX players who have all scored the magic ‘5 or more’ rounders in a match - Tara M (7½), Kai S (5) and Olivia W (7½). Well done to our U11 teams who came 2nd and 3rd at the recent Millfield tournaments.

Athletics

The whole school are looking forward to our Sports Day on Saturday 10 June and it certainly promises to be a fun and exciting morning with the children all giving it their all. Our athletes have been training hard and it is great to see school records being broken already this term. Well done to all of the athletes that have represented us so well at recent matches, we have seen some incredible performances at the King's College Festival, the Port Regis Festival, the Yeovil District Trials and in the Year 3, 5 and 6 matches against All Hallows. There is plenty more to come and we look forward to the second half of the term.

Tennis

The tennis courts have been very busy and we have enjoyed both internal year group tournaments and also matches against local schools.

Biathle

39 Hazlegrove children competed at the South West Schools Championships last Sunday and all thoroughly enjoyed the day. This event is a continuous run, swim, run event and it was lovely to be part of this hugely popular competition. With over 300 children from across the west country competing it was a busy and very exciting day. Hazlegrove enjoyed huge success and brought home a whole host of both individual trophies and team medals. Congratulations to all of our athletes and we look forward to the National Schools Finals in June.

Triathle

Congratulations to Angus E, Carina H and Alex R who have recently been selected to represent Great Britain in the Triathle (a continuous shoot, run and swim competition) event at the European Championships in Portugal in July. They qualified at the recent South West Triathle Championships.

Riding

Good luck to our school riders who compete at Hickstead this weekend in the NSEA National Eventers Finals and also to those competing for the school at the Bath and West Show next week. Congratulations to our three riders who competed so well at the recent Stonar One Day Event and to Emily W for her two individual placing’s in a very competitive class.

Swimming

A huge well done to our 5 Hazlegrove swimmers who reached the National IAPS Finals that took place in Crawley earlier this month. It is only the top 12 relay teams and top 16 individual swimmers in the country that are invited to swim at this event and we were thrilled to be so well represented. A special mention must go to Anya E who finished in an incredible 4th place in the 50m Backstroke Final - a fitting reward for the hours that she spends in the water every day!
