If live music, country line-dancing, Easter egg hunts, a feast thrown in for good measure and giants spiders appeal to you, then Hazlegrove was the place to be last weekend.

Saturday afternoon saw the children prepare for the Easter Feast.  Every child (and adult) wore an Easter bonnet to the feast - and what a sight they were! The meal was delicious and the children loved the more formal “night out”. After the feast, we were royally entertained by 'The Johnsons' – a country – folk 8-piece band. The children were the perfect audience - there was singing, dancing and cheering! The line dancing went down well, although, I am not sure that Billy Ray Cyrus would have approved.

Sunday was an action-packed day. Chapel service was led by Mr Beverley from King’s Bruton. We were treated to an inspiring talk and we even learnt that Mr Beverley loves chocolate! After letter writing, Fitzjames transformed into a mini zoo. The Bug Fest crew arrived with all of their creepy and crawly pets. The children absolutely loved seeing the snakes, lizards and giant spiders. Mr Robertson was somewhat reluctantly “encouraged” to hold a giant tarantula.

The children made mother’s day gifts, baked hot-cross buns, constructed Easter nests and Easter eggs and raced go-karts. And this was all squeezed in before lunch! Football, swimming, hockey and golf were played by lots of the children. And the bike (and rip stick) sheds were raided resulting in the school looking, at times, like a busy roundabout in India!

In the spirit of “EarthWYZ – our recent Sustainability Festival, the children flew kites made out of plastic bags. This was not only ingenious but also a necessity, after the legitimate kite snapped its cord and made for its freedom in the grounds of Sparkford Hall. Mr Robertson had an eventful day as he was seen running after his kite and clambering up a tree to rescue it.  The woods was a hub of activity too with fires used to bake damper bread and the smoke could be seen lofting into the air. You could hear children laughing…fire never fails to excite and captivate children’s imagination.

The children were fantastic company on Saturday evening at the Easter Feast and they threw themselves into all the activities on offer on Sunday.  They certainly know how to enjoy themselves. And that makes our time here, so very special, enjoyable and memorable.
