Year 4 turn back time to learn in the Victorian way

Year 4 turn back time to learn in the Victorian way

Academic History

Dressed in a wonderful array of costumes, Year 4 got down to the rather serious business of being Victorian school children for the day last week.

The children were able to experience life in a Victorian school room with a formidable schoolmaster, learning in a way which was very different to ours. Writing with scratchy pens, learning to recite and use an abacus, sitting in rows and with the threat of a dunces cap in the corner, they quickly realised how lucky they are to be 21st century children at Hazlegrove.

The wealth of Victorian artefacts that they were able to experience was amazing.  The children especially enjoyed the playing with different games and toys – some of which we still use today.  In the afternoon, they were set the task of identifying as many very strange looking artefacts as possible and the children relished being able to pick them up and examine them closely. They loved the demonstration of the rat catcher which ended a very worthwhile day.
